Two House Fires in San Tan Valley

rural-fire-response

On April 15th, at 9:30 a.m., the Engine Company from Station 841, located at 911 E Hunt Highway in San Tan Valley, along with Engines 842 & 844, responded to an emergency call for smoke visible from the interior of a home located on Silktassel trail in Johnson ranch. The homeowner had reported a stove fire. On scene, the crews found heavy smoke coming from the open garage, front door, and from the attic vent. Crews deployed an aggressive fire attack and within minutes had the fire out, stopping the property loss. Damage was limited to the kitchen and residual smoke damage.

According to the resident they were cooking tortillas when they stepped away from the stove briefly. Noticing the fire they attempted to put it out with flour, but it grew too rapidly, and they were forced to evacuate.

Calls throughout the day would be steady for 841, including, covering adjoining areas with Engine 843 assisting PCSO with a barricaded subject.

At 8:48 p.m. Engine 841, along with Engines 843, 842 & 844, responded to their second structure fire call on Black Opal in Copper Basin, also in San Tan Valley. Called in by a neighbor who heard fire alarms going off and noticed smoke coming from the eves, crews found heavy smoke on scene. Crews made entry and found smoke filling the house from ceiling to floor. Searching the home, they located the fire contained to a single bedroom. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, containing damage primarily to the bedroom of origin.

The owners were not home at the time. Initial observations and statements point to an overloaded electrical outlet as the potential point of origin. Crews report the damage could have been much worse if not for the fact that all the bedroom doors were closed, which contained the fire to the bedroom of origin.

Safety Points:

  • Cooking fires are the #1 cause of house fires, followed by electrical fires.
  • Smoke alarms save lives. The second home had working smoke alarms, which gave early warning.
  • Own and familiarize yourself with a fire extinguisher.
  • Closed doors save lives. We recommend sleeping with bedroom doors closed and closing the door to rooms not in use.
  • Have an evacuation plan.

No one plans for an emergency. Make sure your homeowners' insurance is up to date and the right coverage options are included. Then, make sure your Rural Metro Fire membership is active and avoid fee for service charges.
